Where`s Home?

1.- Mind Map

2.- The Song

"1913 Massacre" by Woddy Guthrie

Take a trip with me in 1913,
To Calumet, Michigan, in the copper country.
I will take you to a place called Italian Hall,
Where the miners are having their big Christmas ball.

I will take you in a door and up a high stairs,
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere,
I will let you shake hands with the people you see,
And watch the kids dance around the big Christmas tree.

You ask about work and you ask about pay,
They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day,
Working the copper claims, risking their lives,
So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives.

There's talking and laughing and songs in the air,
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere,
Before you know it you're friends with us all,
And you're dancing around and around in the hall.

Well a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights,
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet,
To hear all this fun you would not realize,
That the copper boss' thug men are milling outside.

The copper boss' thugs stuck their heads in the door,
One of them yelled and he screamed, "there's a fire,"
A lady she hollered, "there's no such a thing.
Keep on with your party, there's no such thing."

A few people rushed and it was only a few,
"It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you,"
A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down,
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out.

And then others followed, a hundred or more,
But most everybody remained on the floor,
The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke,
While the children were smothered on the stairs by the door.

Such a terrible sight I never did see,
We carried our children back up to their tree,
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree,
And the children that died there were seventy-three.

The piano played a slow funeral tune,
And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon,
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned,
"See what your greed for money has done."

2.- The Song

a) Because they represent the human suffering in the cooper mines.

b) Makes me reflect and put in the position of miners.

c) Makes me think in the situation and the conditions in where miners worked.

d) I think it's a song charged of suffering and hope. For me is a very good song, considering the context in where was composed.

The Palermo Polo Open starts being played at 1893, some years later since British people introduced this traditional sport to Argentina. 122º years have passed of that first opportunity in where the Hurlingham team composed by Francisco J.Balfour, Frank Furber, C.J. Tetley and Hugo Scott-Robson won that final. Since that moment, every year many teams with the best polo players and horses of the planet, play for the glory and honour of the world polo.

The final of the Palermo Polo Open of 2014, played by La Dolfina against Ellerstina on its version 121º, was extremely different from that played on 1893, because of the professionalism, the changes in the form of playing, the genetics of the horses and the technology used; they converted this in a spectacular show to see and enjoy from a good moment.

La Dolfina arrived unbeaten to that special match, and if he won that final, equalize the historic mark of the team Coronel Suarez lead by Juan Carlos Harriot, winning the double consecutive triple crown.

Approximately forty celsius degrees and all prepared to start, everyone knew it would be a very hard match. La Dolfina hit from the first moment to Ellerstina, he had not passed more than thirty seconds, and the team marked the one cero through the uruguayan David Stirling. The match maintains balanced since a long time, and Ellerstina defended by the hand of the expert in penalties and the perfect ten goaler, Facundo Pieres, who shortened distances between La Dolfina.

The match continued, and the physical exhaustion arrived in a match charge of passion and emotion, leaving that demostrated in the death of a horse “Anay Sur Cielito”, played by Juan Martín Nero of La Dolfina in the middle of the field and the tiredness of some players.

Everything was defined in the eighth and last chucker, in where La Dolfina runs with a small advantage in the goal counter. The desperation of Ellerstina began to feel, while La Dolfina approached to the glory. They began hugging between players, the final bell rings, finally being victory of the team lead by best polo player of the history, Adolfo Cambiaso, breaking al the records and getting into the top of the world polo.

Biofuels (page 330)

The picture was taken at a gas station, and we can see on the right,  a fuel pomp that distributes the liquid, and on the left, and advertisement that promotes the use of biofuels, and indicate the type and percentage of gasoline that people are going to use.

This picture, is a funny representation of biofuels. In the middle there are a human hand holding a pod corn that simulate a fuel pomp. Probably, this indicates to the spectator the possibility to use biofuel as an easy and cheap solution to not contaminate more the planet.

Why are social groups so important at your school? How can you identify them?

Cultural identity is an important factor for the development of the society or an specific social group. Many people, belong or is identified with this kind of associations, looking at them the possibility to creat a kind of micro space in which feel secure and comfortable to develop in a good way in the world, being able to relate with people like them and not fell discriminated or simply uncomfortable in a space ”that is not theirs”. Given the constant changes in our behavior, along with the innovation and creativity of human beings, they have opened many spaces where the so-called subcultures have emerged.

In my school live daily around 1,000 people, a fairly large amount that invites to generated this kind of subcultures. It is practically impossible having that quantity of people inside of school that come from different parts of the country or sometimes of the world have the same interests or preferences and attractions.

Written Assignment

The Kite Runner

RATIONAL

This writing, takes as a reference the book “The Kite Runner” written by Khaled Hosseini, specifically chapter seven, where the central fact of the plot occurs, which is the Hassan`s rape, servant, friend and secretly half brother of the protagonist, Amir.

The proposal has been chosen as a type of text for the development of this work, with formal language and directed to the readers of the book, because it allows me to represent the knowledge of the novel in a better way through the incorporation of the core elements.

It will be a profoundly significant change which is narrated in this chapter,  causing a radical turn that will situate both characters in very different positions from the ones originally presented by the author.

The context where the scene takes place is Kabul, capital city of Afghanistan that reflects the Afghan reality and culture of 1975, characterized by a good economic moment for the country, but with brutal social contrasts, evidence of economic inequalities and ethnics and racial conflicts between their habitants, all framed by deep Islamic traditions.

These two friends, Amir and Hassan, belonged to different ethnic groups. Amir was a Pashtun, ethnic of the elite who enjoyed social privileges, whereas Hassan was a Hazara, ethnic socially inferior whose members were principally servants.

The racism that marked this society is the thing that provokes the central fact of the plot.

WRITING

As it is common and typical of the culture in Afghanistan, the KITE competitions where extremely usual. They consist in trying to overthrow the comets using for this an special thread that requires an specific treatment, which Amir much as Hassan used to develop. The men who succeed in cuting the opponent`s KITE would be the winners.

Amir and Hassan, two boys with different realities, son of Baba and Ali respectively, where fans and team partners of team in these competitions. One of the days which they debuted, they managed to get the title and win the confrontation after an arduous and sacrificed period of work, in which both wanted to get the KITE of the opponent who managed to cut as a trophy and symbol of triumph and power.

Hassan, son of the servant of Baba, a child of simple and little-noticed appearance, decides to search the longed kite, that he had fallen in an extremely narrow and closed alley of the village, typical of their architectural culture. Hassan enters into the alley in search of his goal, but is enclosed by three violent boys older than him, Assef, Wali and Kamal, all of the Pashtun ethnic. At that precise moment is seen by his companion, friend and future revealed brother, Amir, who with courage and effort goes into the town to ask for support to help his friend of the situation that was faced.

At that moment, a group of people belonging to the same ethnicity as Hassan, runs to the place to observe, and with much exaltation grab the three boys, saving Hassan of this terrible situation. The three adolescents, were severely beaten and later tied by the people, leaving them injured, feeling humiliated by the inferior ethnicity, causing a burning desire for revenge later.

After the dispute, Amir and Hassan they go home with the precious KITE, but unfortunately broken and dirty, in the same way that the connivence between Pashtuns and Hazara's in that ancestral social structure, product of the conflict.

The two friends arrive home, still agitated and scared, and they tell Baba what happened. The appreciation and the enormous affection of Baba to Hassan, that triggers the jealousy of Amir, they made to mobilize their networks of contacts with the local policy, to arrest the three young attackers. Then they were jailed, generating a conflict between ethnic groups.
Concretized such action, the parents of the three boys they heard that the person who sent to catch their children was Baba, belonging to the same ethnic group, also generating a conflict between Pashtuns.

The three parents send hired thugs to hit four of the participants responsible of the attack to their children. However, this thugs did not measure his strength and were brutally violent toward their victims, to the point of taking their lives. Furthermore, moved by its enormous desire of revenge, send to burn the warehouse where Baba kept their most profitable products. With this context the daily life of one part of Kabul became a potential powder keg.

While the hatred grows with the mistrust, Amir and Hassan manage to repair the captured KITE, rising to the sky like hopeful that everything will return be as before.
